The Coca-Cola Football League One semi final play off this Friday promises to be an exciting match. Although Doncaster Rovers have slightly more points in the League One, coming in third place with 80 points against Southend United’s 76, the two teams are very evenly matched. Doncaster lost the last match they played, a 2-1 reverse at Cheltenham and they will be looking to make up for missing out on automatic promotion.

Sean O’Driscoll would be much happier if his side could repeat their recent performance against relegated Luton, a match in which they scored twice and defensively worked hard to prevent any thing getting past. It was a similar story a week earlier when Donny easily defeated Swindon. However, their 1-1 draw against mid-table Leyton Orient shows how the team can sometimes struggle to come up with the goods.

Southend on the other hand, have not won a match since they beat Carlisle 2-1 in mid April. They have since suffered defeat at the hands of Tranmere, a team that finished eleventh and then drew with relegated Port Vale last weekend where a victory would have set up a rematch between themselves and the Cumbrians.

Such performances show that the team has a lot of work to do before Friday’s match up against Doncaster. That said, the Southend strikers have been showing all season that they are well able to put on the pressure and have scored a massive 70 goals this season in comparison to Doncaster’s 53.

In the two league fixtures between the pair this season, goals have been plentiful. Southend won 3-2 at Roots Hall in September and Doncaster ran out 3-1 winners at the Keepmoat Stadium in the return match in December. Prior to the defeat in September, Donny had won the last four league meetings, home and away and will be confident of taking something from the first leg at Roots Hall. However, without a win in their last couple of games and the final play-off side, the pressure will be off Southend compared to Rovers who must also be disappointed at missing out on automatic promotion. Steve Tilson’s side could well take an advantage into next week’s second leg.
