Winning one’s group is meant to allow for an easier quarter final, as one plays the runner-up of the other group, but this is not the case for Group D winners Spain who will face World Cup champions Italy in the last eight.
The Spanish are one of three teams to have won all three group games and boast the tournament’s leading goal scorer in David Villa, and the Italians have had a less-than-impressive start to their campaign. But the Azzurri have a reputation of getting better as the tournament progresses and are most dangerous under pressure, this match is shaping up to be a classic.
Spain fielded a weaker side against defending Euro champions Greece, who prior to the game had failed to score a single goal in this year’s tournament, but still managed a 2-1 win. The Spanish Primera’s top goal scorer Guiza scored his first international goal and proved he is a capable substitute for the deadly pair of Torres and David Villa. Spain’s style of play has been a pleasure to watch so far, and their creative, flowing playing form will be tough to defend against.
After a shocking 3-0 loss at the hands of the Dutch, Italy failed to return to their best against Romania, managing only a draw. But in a crucial match against World Cup final opponents France, they pulled themselves together to win 2-0. If they keep improving as they gain momentum, Spain may be in for a surprise.

This is one of the toughest matches to choose a winner. In 27 meetings between the pair, Italy have won nine, Spain eight and 10 have finished all square. This game is likely to be as close as the statistics suggest and it will be interesting to see whether Spain can hold their nerve now the real contest begins. A physical encounter is expected and Italy are likely to play a cagey game to do just enough to see themselves into the semi finals. The Italians beat Spain 2-1 in the 1994 World Cup and a similar scoreline is the prediction here.
