Spartak Moscow won 2-0 on the night at the Luzhniki Stadium but still lost 3-2 on aggregate to Ligue One side Marseille.

Spartak took a first half lead but could not score again until five minutes from the end. By that time it was too late and Marseille scraped through to the last 16.

1 - 0 Alexandr Pavlenko (39 minutes)

Spartak took the lead six minutes before the break when Pavlenko netted from close range.

2 - 0 Roman Pavlyuchenko (85 minutes)

Pavlyuchenko hammered in a rebound late on to set up a tense finish but it was not enough as Spartak went out 3-2 on aggregate.
