Once Premiership contenders Arsenal finish another season without silverware as they face Sunderland in their final match of the season. With 80 points and third place secured, there will be little for Arsenal to play for but pride, while hosts Sunderland will end their season in the lower end of the table, but crucially safe from relegation.

With an impressive start to the season and as leaders of the Premiership at the start of the year, the Gunners looked to be heading for glory. However, a loss in form in the league and a shock FA Cup exit narrowed their silverware hopes to Europe. When Liverpool staged a dramatic comeback in the second leg of the Champion’s League quarterfinal to end Arsenal’s trophy hopes, many began t question veteran coach Arsene Wenger’s ability as manager. Despite this, they have remained relatively consistent in the league and will be formidable opponents for minnows Sunderland.

Midfield legend and rookie manager Roy Keane will not be expecting miracles this weekend but will be grateful for another year in the Premiership following a difficult season. After starting promisingly with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland struggled through the first half of the season, often succumbing to bigger, stronger teams. They have had mixed fortunes in the build up the season finale, with just 2 wins in the last five games.

Their last meeting at the Emirates Stadium in October was a thrilling event, with an 80th minute goal by Robin van Persie securing the three points for Arsenal in a 3-2 victory.

Arsenal threw away a two goal lead when the pair met in October and only a late goal from Robin Van Persie spared the Gunners blushes as they won 3-2. Arsene Wenger’s side have won their last two visits to the Stadium of Light convincingly, 3-0 in 2005/06 and 4-0 in 2002/03. Sunderland have little to play for as they are safe from relegation and with Roy Keane threatening to wield the axe, some players may not be motivated if they suspect they have no future at the club.
