Chelsea’s resounding 6-1 hammering of Derby County on Wednesday night cut the gap between themselves and second-placed United to just three points and they will be confident of picking up another maximum return when they visit Sunderland this weekend. Chelsea have now scored 10 goals in their last two Premiership fixtures and are becoming adept at putting weaker Premiership opposition to the sword. Sean Thornton also gave Sunderland an early lead in the 2002/03 meeting, but Gianfranco Zola and a late Carlton Cole winner secured all three points for Claudio Ranieri’s side. Sunderland’s last home victory against Chelsea came in the 2000/01 season when a Kevin Phillips penalty was enough to send the Blues back to London with nothing.

Chelsea are in good form of late as they look to prove the title race is not just between Arsenal and Manchester United.
