There was to be no opening day glory for the host nation as Switzerland crashed 1-0 to the Czech Republic.

The Swiss played well in the first half but the loss of all-time leading goal scorer Alexander Frei just before the break appeared to knock the stuffing out of them. Substitute striker Vaclav Sverkos netted the winner with 20 minutes remaining.

The Banik Ostrava striker ensured a first victory for the Czech Republic when he latched onto a ball over the top of the Swiss defence and volleyed home from 12 yards.

Alexander Frei misses a chance for Swizterland after 21 minutes.

Frei is again involved and sees a venomous strike parried by goalkeeper Peter Cech.
