Switzerland could use their home advantage to cause a Euro 2008 upset against the highly fancied Czech Republic.

Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland will start the tournament with a difficult match against European powerhouse Czech Republic in the opening match of Group A. They will be hoping for a positive start to their campaign but enter the game as heavy underdogs. World number 48 Switzerland have not had a good run-up to Euro 2008, with only one win this year so far, against lowly Slovakia.

A narrow defeat to England followed by a heavy 4-0 loss to Germany will not have done any favours for their confidence. With Portugal and Turkey also up ahead in their group matches, Switzerland is arguably the weakest team in Group A, and by standing, the next lowest team Turkey is a signinficant 23 places above Switzerland.

In contrast, Czech Republic is the strongest team in Group in terms of the FIFA World Ranking, sitting at number six. Despite this, they have also not had the best year so far, having lost to Poland and only managing a draw against Denmark before finally winning against Lithuania. Some will doubt the strength of this squad without talisman Pavel Nedved, but with strikers such as Milan Baros and Jan Koller the Czech Republic are a force to be reckoned with. Not forgetting Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech guarding the net, they look to have a competitive package.

The Czechs will be looking to get a good start to the tournament going into their next match against Portugal, who will be much more difficult opposition. While this should be a relatively straight forward match for the Czech Republic, it is the opening match of Euro 2008 and as Senegal showed France in the first game of World Cup 2002, anything can happen.

The Swiss do not have the best records in the Euros, merely taking part in the first round in both 1996 and 2004 before taking an early plane home. However, with home advantage, it could be a different story. The Swiss have a good spine to the team and they welcome back Dortmund striker Alexander Frei, whose international record of 35 goals in 58 games in nothing short of exceptional. The Czechs have not had the best year so far and much will be expected of strikeforce Jan Koller and Milan Baros to wreak the same havoc they did in Portugal four years ago.
