Carling Cup holders Chelsea have the chance to defend their title against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Final on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea have reached the final of the Carling Cup for the third time in four seasons and as the current Cup holders, have the chance to retain their title at the new Wembley Stadium against Tottenham Hotspur.

Last season Chelsea left it late to beat a youthful Arsenal side 2-1 in the Final. Theo Walcott gave the Gunners an early lead but Didier Drogba netted twice, with the winner being struck six minutes from full time. Spurs won the competition back in the 1998-99 season when Allan Neilsen scored a stoppage time winner to beat Leicester City.

This season, Chelsea reached the final by beating Hull 4-0 in the third round, Leicester City 4-3 in the fourth round, Liverpool 2-0 in the quarter final and Everton 3-1 on aggregate in the semi final. Spurs reached the final by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in the third round, Blackpool 2-0 in the fourth round, Manchester City 2-0 in the quarter final and Arsenal 6-2 on aggregate in the semi final.

Spurs have a wretched record against Chelsea and last season’s 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane was just their second in 34 meetings in all competitions since the Premiership began and their first league victory against the Blues since the top flight was formed back in 1992. However, apart from the Premiership win last season, their previous other win was a 5-1 semi final drubbing of Chelsea in the League Cup semi final second leg, which saw them win 6-3 on aggregate.

Chelsea are firm favourites to retain their title but Tottenham Hotspur cannot be discounted. They have made steady progress under manager Juande Ramos and proved they could rise to the occasion by hammering North London rivals Arsenal 5-1 in the second leg of the semi final. Depending on what sort of team Avram Grant puts out, with the Blues’ Premiership campaign and second leg against Olympiakos in the Champions League to consider, Spurs may just be able to pull off an upset on Sunday afternoon.
