A replay of the Carling Cup final takes place on Wednesday night when Tottenham Hotspur take on Premiership title chasers Chelsea.

Mid table Tottenham Hotspur arguably have little to play for with nine matches to go. Having secured the Carling Cup this season, a midweek UEFA Cup exit by PSV Eindhoven ended their hopes of a second trophy and mid tab table obscurity seems to be on the cards. Juande Ramos’ side lost at Manchester City on Sunday despite taking the lead through Robbie Keane and it begs the questions of just how motivated the side are for the final quarter of the campaign.

Chelsea earned a ninth win in 12 matches on Saturday when they beat Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. John Terry scored his first goal for 19 months when he headed in an early goal but Blues keeper Carlo Cudicini was in inspired form to denty Andy Reid a glorious goal from a free kick. The victory hauled Avram Grant’s side back into the title race and they now sit just three points behind both Manchester United and Arsenal.

Despite a dreadful record overall against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotsput have done well in recent meetings. The Carling Cup final victory was only their third in 35 in all competitions since the Premier League’s inception in 1992 but Spurs won at White Hart Lane last season. Calude Makelele gave the Blues an early lead but Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon made it 2-1 in November 2006. Chelsea recorded a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge this season through Juliano Belletti and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Tottenham Hotspur look like a deflated side following last week’s UEFA Cup exit by PSV Eindhoven.
