Current UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn defends his title for the first time since beating Joe Stevenson by submission back in UFC 80: Rapid Fire. Penn takes on former champion Sean Sherk, who won the title at UFC 64 in October 2006 but was official stripped of the title in December 2007 for testing positive for steroids.

Sherk has lost just one of his last 16 professional MMA fights, stretching back five years and fights for the first time after almost a year out, after beating Hermes Franca in July 2007 to defend his lightweight title before being stripped of it later in the year. Penn, in comparison, has been more inconsistent and has won and lost three of his last six MMA bouts.

Also on the card is Tito Otiz against Lyoto Machida in a light heavyweight bout. After two victories against Ken Shamrock in 2006, Ortiz lost to Chuck Liddell in UFC 66 in December 2006 and then drew with Rashad Evans in UFC 73 last July. Undefeated Machida has won on his last four UFC appearances, beating Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in UFC 79, Kazuhiro Nakamura in UFC 76, David heath in UFC 70 and Sam Hoger in UFC 67.

Wanderlei Silva will want to end a run of three successive MMA defeats when he takes on Keith Jardine, who beat Chuck Liddell by a split decision last September in UFC 76.
