Championship club WBA take on Premiership side Portsmouth in the first of two FA Cup semi finals this weekend.

West Bromwich Albion are on the verge of an historic season. They are pressing hard for promotion to the Premiership and could have the quality of squad which could see them win through to the final at the expense of their Premiership opponents. WBA saw off Charlton Athletic in round three, Peterborough United in round four, Coventry City in round five and Bristol Rovers in the quarter finals.

Portsmouth, the sole Premiership representative in this season’s FA Cup, are unsurprisingly the bookmakers favourites to win both this match and the tournament outright. Pompey are currently sixth in the league, but nine points behind fourth placed Liverpool. Harry Redknapp’s side are likely to play UEFA Cup football next season, either through qualification via the league or the FA Cup. The Baggies have a rich FA Cup history and have won the FA Cup five times, with the last win coming in 1968 and were runners-uup on a further five occasions. Portsmouth have won the trophy just once, back in 1939 but were losing finalists on two other occasions.

Neither side will have a better opportunity to reach the FA Cup final but it is difficult to see past a Portsmouth win. Harry Redknapp’s side are one of the best outside the “top four” and have the players capable of performing on a big occasion. West Brom are arguably, player for player, the best side outside of the top flight and are just two points off an automatic promotion spot, but there is still a big gulf in class between them and Pompey.
