West Ham United are in danger of a backlash from a Chelsea side licking their wounds from their Carling Cup Final defeat last weekend.

Chelsea will be keen to return to winning ways after relinquishing their Carling Cup trophy to Tottenham Hotspur in the final last Sunday. Didier Drogba gave Avram Grant’s side the lead but Dimitar Berbatov and then Jonathan Woodgate in extra time made it a memorable afternoon for Spurs. Chelsea have won eight out of 13 on the road this season, losing three times and drawing the other two. However, news of discontent in the Stamford Bridge camp needs to be solved else Chelsea’s title challenge will be over.

West Ham United are bang in the middle of the table occupying tenth position. They have won three of their last six matches, losing just once, a 1-0 away defeat at Wigan Athletic. Their last game saw them grind out a late winner against struggling Fulham with Nolberto Solano scoring the decisive goal three minutes from the end.

Chelsea have won on their last two visits to Upton Park, dishing out a 4-1 hammering last season and winning 3-1 the season before. Last season Shaun Wright-Phillips scored two goals and Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba netted one apiece in a vital Premiership title race clash and the Blues have recorded a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge against the Hammers this season. Joe Cole scored the winner with 14 minutes left on the clock. West Ham last beat Chelsea at Upton Park in 2003 when Paul Di Canio scored the winner in a 1-0 victory.

Chelsea have a sound recent record at Upton Park but the club also have an important Champions League match against Olympiakos next week and manager Avram Grant may have an eye on that. After losing the Carling Cup, the Blues have to remain involved in the other competitions and the Champions League is the biggest prize in Europe. Add to this West Ham are in decent form themselves, winning three of their last six matches and they would love to put one over their West London rivals.
