Zenit St Petersburg narrowly defeated Villarreal in the first leg of the UEFA Cup clash following a howler from the visiting goalkeeper.

Russian champions Zenit, who will compete in next seasons Champions League, pinched a first leg victory, something they failed to do in either of their home games during the group stage.
